MaineHealth Opens Comprehensive Addiction Treatment Facility in Portland, Maine

MaineHealth has launched a new addiction treatment facility on St. John Street in Portland, Maine, offering a range of services for individuals battling substance use disorder. The Comprehensive Addiction Medicine (CAM) clinic, which began operations in February, serves as a centralized resource for addiction recovery, providing access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT), behavioral health support, primary care, and harm reduction services.

A Holistic Approach to Addiction Treatment in Portland, Maine

Located at 576 St. John Street, the CAM clinic is designed to remove barriers to care, featuring walk-in hours from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, and the option for patients to text the front desk for appointment scheduling. The clinic is staffed by addiction medicine physicians, behavioral health clinicians, nurses, and peer support specialists, offering a comprehensive and individualized approach to recovery.

Dr. Sarah Hipkens, an addiction medicine physician at the clinic, highlighted the importance of immediate access to treatment.

“Many individuals seeking help have a small window of motivation. If they face delays in care, they may relapse and end up in the emergency room repeatedly,” she explained.

By streamlining access to addiction treatment and care coordination, the CAM clinic reduces the need for patients to navigate multiple healthcare providers, increasing the likelihood of successful recovery outcomes.

Services Offered at MaineHealth’s Addiction Clinic

The Portland-based facility provides an array of addiction recovery services, including:

  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT), including daily and extended-release buprenorphine
  • Primary care services for co-occurring health conditions
  • Mental health counseling and group therapy
  • Harm reduction resources, such as fentanyl test strips and wound care
  • Insurance assistance and transportation support
  • Community programs, including yoga, meditation, and art therapy

With over 200 patients currently enrolled, the clinic aims to expand access to recovery housing resources in Portland and South Portland, Maine.

Addressing Barriers to Recovery Housing in Portland

While the clinic offers robust outpatient services, it does not provide detox or overnight accommodations. To bridge this gap, clinic staff collaborate with local recovery housing providers to help individuals find supportive living environments during their transition to long-term sobriety.

For many individuals, recovery housing in Portland and South Portland, Maine, is an essential next step following treatment at the clinic. Many local homes, including those certified by the Maine Association of Recovery Residences (MARR), offer structured environments that foster sustained sobriety.

A Community-Focused Approach to Recovery

The team at MaineHealth’s addiction treatment facility brings both professional expertise and personal experience to their work. Sonia Winslow, the clinic’s practice manager, shared that her own family has been affected by substance use disorder, fueling her dedication to supporting those in recovery.

“I know that there’s a person behind the addiction who is absolutely beautiful,” Winslow said. “When folks are sober, they can really be a different person.”

The new facility is the result of a partnership between MaineHealth, the City of Portland, and the Davis Family Foundation, underscoring a community-wide effort to combat the opioid crisis in Maine.

Looking Ahead: Expanding Recovery Housing Opportunities

With additional settlement funds to be allocated in the coming years, organizations focused on sober housing and addiction recovery in Portland and South Portland, Maine, are encouraged to explore funding opportunities. These funds can help expand programs that provide individuals in recovery with the support and stability needed to rebuild their lives.
