The Mission and Vision Behind Vanderburgh Sober Living
Building Recovery Communities: Our Mission and Vision
Vanderburgh Sober Living, or VSL, is a network of independently operated recovery homes organized and supported by The Vanderburgh Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 Charitable Foundation. At VSL, our mission and vision are more than just words; they are the foundation of everything we do. As a network of independently operated recovery homes, we are united by a shared commitment to making the world a better place for those on their recovery journey.
Our Mission: Why We Exist
We exist to ensure access to a supportive, affordable, and sustainable home for each person on a recovery journey.
Our mission is to help Operators build recovery communities where guests are supported in their recovery journeys. Our team has dedicated their professional lives to further our mission, and we will not give up until every community has the resources it needs to support men and women recovering from substance abuse.
Our motto, “We Grow Stronger Together,” reflects our commitment to building recovery communities that are supportive, inclusive, and empowering. In our homes, guests are not just tenants; they are family members who support each other in their journey towards a life free from substance use.
Our Vision: How Our Mission Will Manifest
Our vision is to establish 11 regional offices and 220 service areas to support 2,400 VSL Chartered recovery homes.
We see a world where every individual on their journey to recovery has access to a supportive and empowering living environment. Our vision is to expand this reach through the establishment of 11 regional offices and 220 service areas, ultimately supporting 2,400 Chartered Sober Living homes in the VSL network. Through this expansion, we aim to create a widespread network that not only provides safe havens for recovery but also fosters a sense of community, resilience, and hope across diverse regions. You’re just alive
What We Do: Building Recovery Communities
Our network of sober living homes is designed to offer guided independence. Guests live together as a family, adhering to recovery-focused house rules while working on their personal goals. Our homes provide the structure and support needed to help individuals achieve lasting recovery.

Honoring Our Namesake
Our organization is named after Richard Vanderburgh, a man whose life was dedicated to serving others in the recovery community. Richard’s legacy is one of compassion, mentorship, and unwavering support for those on their recovery journey. At VSL, we strive to embody Richard’s spirit in all that we do, ensuring that our homes are not just places to live but places where individuals can rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
The Symbolism of the Purple Heart
You may have noticed our frequent use of the purple heart emoji (💜). This is not just a design choice; it symbolizes our deep commitment to the recovery movement. Purple is the official color of addiction recovery, and by adopting it, we align ourselves with the values of compassion, support, and healing that are at the core of this cause.
