Biography
About Kate Saad
Kate Saad has spent more than five years working directly with recovery housing operators across the United States, and the clinical years before that treating the people those homes are built for.
She is the Director of Operations at Vanderburgh Sober Living. Before joining, she led a residential treatment center in Massachusetts, where she built the operational and compliance expertise she now brings to recovery housing.
The direction of travel is unusual. Most people arrive at recovery housing operations from property management or from business, and they learn the clinical side slowly and secondhand. Kate arrived from the other direction. She knows what a resident has just been through when they walk in the door on day one, which is why she is unusually hard to persuade that a rule is fine because it is convenient for the house.
Her work at VSL is mostly with operators: helping standardize practice, translating the NARR standards into things a house can do on a Tuesday morning, and coaching new leaders through the situations no one warns them about. She has become the person operators call when a house is not working and they cannot name why.
She is a steady presence in a field that runs on urgency, and she is straightforward that the job is not to be everyone’s friend. Structure is what makes a home safe. Compassion is what makes the structure bearable. Neither one works without the other.
What She Does
Focus Areas
Four places where a house is either well run or already in trouble, whether or not anyone has noticed yet.
House Operations and Structure
Intake, house rules, mentor coverage, and the daily routines that make a home predictable. Most house crises are structural problems that were visible weeks earlier.
Compliance and Certification
Recovery residence standards, documentation, and the certification process. She helps operators build files that hold up when a certifying body, a referral source, or a town asks.
Continuum of Care
How a recovery residence fits with detox, residential treatment, and outpatient care, and how to build referral relationships that send the right residents rather than simply filling beds.
Coaching Emerging Leaders
Working with new operators and house mentors on the parts of the job that are hardest to teach: discharge decisions, relapse response, and holding a boundary with someone you like.
Approach
On Running a Home
A recovery home is not a rental with rules attached. It is a program that happens to have bedrooms.
Kate’s clinical background shows up most clearly in how she reads a struggling house. Where an operator sees a difficult resident, she tends to look at what changed in the house two weeks earlier, because behavior in shared living is rarely just about one person.
The other half of her work is protecting operators from themselves. New operators almost always start too soft, then overcorrect into rigidity after the first serious incident. She coaches them toward the harder middle: consistent structure applied without contempt, and documented well enough that no one has to reconstruct it later from memory.
“Residents can live with a hard rule. What breaks a house is a rule that moves.”
