Maine Recovery Council Awards $13.9 Million in Opioid Settlement Funds to Support Recovery Housing and Sober Living Efforts

Maine Recovery Council Awards $13.9 Million in Opioid Settlement Funds to Support Recovery Housing and Sober Living Efforts
The Maine Recovery Council has announced its largest funding allocation yet, awarding $13.9 million to 43 organizations across the state. This funding, drawn from Maine’s $230 million share of national opioid settlements, is part of an ongoing effort to address the opioid crisis over the next 18 years. The funds will support critical services, including sober living programs, recovery housing, and harm reduction efforts throughout the state, with a particular focus on communities like Portland, Maine, and South Portland, Maine.
Supporting Sober Living and Recovery Housing Initiatives
Among the recipients is Milestone Recovery, a Portland-based organization dedicated to providing support for individuals experiencing homelessness and substance use disorders. Milestone Recovery will receive over $300,000 to enhance its low-barrier emergency shelter, which offers 36 beds, warm meals, and access to essential recovery resources.
According to Tom Doherty, Executive Director of Milestone Recovery, this funding will help meet the growing demand for recovery support services in Portland and surrounding areas.
“Often, those individuals seeking shelter are in crisis and need immediate support beyond just a place to stay,” Doherty explained. “We focus on getting people off the streets and connected to recovery housing and treatment options without barriers.”
The emergency shelter operates near full capacity every night, demonstrating the ongoing need for expanded sober housing options in Portland and South Portland, Maine.
Meeting the Demand for Recovery Services in Maine
The Maine Recovery Council is responsible for distributing half of the state’s opioid settlement funds, prioritizing initiatives such as:
- Substance use treatment programs
- Sober living homes and recovery housing
- Harm reduction services
- Mental health support and crisis intervention
With over 220 project proposals submitted for this round of funding, demand remains high. However, the council has assured us that additional funding opportunities will be available in the future to support recovery initiatives across Maine further.
“Our focus is to provide funding for individuals who are currently using substances or are in recovery,” said Mary Coyne, the council’s coordinator.
Organizations in Portland and South Portland are expected to play a significant role in addressing the needs of individuals seeking stable and supportive sober living environments.
The Impact of Funding on Maine’s Recovery Community
This latest investment in Maine’s recovery ecosystem is expected to have a transformative impact on the availability of sober living and recovery housing options.
Doherty emphasized the importance of continued support, stating:
“This funding is game-changing. It will help sustain low-barrier shelters and recovery programs that are critical to our community.”
Many recovery housing providers in Portland, South Portland, and beyond rely on these funds to offer structured environments that encourage long-term sobriety.
Looking Ahead: Expanding Recovery Housing Opportunities
With additional settlement funds to be allocated in the coming years, organizations focused on sober housing and addiction recovery in Portland and South Portland, Maine, are encouraged to explore funding opportunities. These funds can help expand programs that provide individuals in recovery with the support and stability needed to rebuild their lives.
